Reading Comprehension

One big focus in reading in second grade is on reading comprehension--students don't just need to be able to read fluently and accurately, they need to demonstrate that they understand what they are reading. In school, we practice stopping to check for understanding, retelling stories, and summarizing the most important parts of what we read. Students are constantly asked to respond to questions about what they are reading, to separate key ideas from details, to make inferences about texts, and to make connections to what they read.

What can you do at home to help your child build his or her reading comprehension? Here are two articles with useful ideas and strategies to try.
