Summer vacation has officially begun! Our class has worked incredibly hard this year to get ready for 3rd grade, and everyone deserves a break. But if your child spends the whole summer hanging out at the pool and watching TV, chances are good that he or she will forget much of what we learned this year, and may not be ready for 3rd grade when school starts up again in August. "Summer slide" is a term used to describe the learning loss that happens to many kids over the summer months each year. Students who do not make a concerted effort to keep skills sharp may lose a great deal of learning each summer, resulting in a large gap in academic achievement by the end of elementary school.
The good news is that summer slide is easy to prevent, and you can help! Make sure that your child reads for at least 20 minutes every day, and find opportunities to practice math facts and play math games. Check at your local library and/or bookstore to find out more about summer reading programs for kids. Check out the "Helpful Links" section of my website for links to learning websites that students have been using in school all year. Learning opportunities are all around!
The following websites, which we have used in school all year, should still be available for you and your child to use this summer.
