About Ms. Gifford
My name is Becca Gifford, and I am a second grade teacher at Hilburn Academy. This is my third year at Hilburn, and I am so excited to learn with all of you this coming year! Before coming to Hilburn, I taught fifth grade at Mangum Elementary and Sandy Ridge Elementary, both in Durham.
I grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, where my dad is an art teacher and my mom is a nurse. I always knew I wanted to have a career where I could help people and be a lifelong learner! I got my Bachelor of Arts in Art History from Williams College in 2008, and my Master of Arts in Teaching from Meredith College in 2012. Before becoming a teacher, I worked at Harvard Medical School and then at Duke University. I moved to North Carolina in 2011 and I love it here! I love reading, baking, and traveling. I enjoy learning new languages and am interested in the ways that languages evolve and are used. I have been fortunate enough to travel to many parts of the world, including Italy (where I lived for a semester during college), Spain, France, England, Russia, Mexico, Turkey, Greece, and Japan. In my free time, my favorite thing to do is read! I especially love historical fiction and fantasy novels. I believe that as a teacher, it is my job to make sure that every one of my students is excited about school and about learning. Each child has a unique way of learning, and I hope to find ways to engage all kinds of learners in the classroom this year. |
