Homework Expectations
-2nd grade homework should take no longer than 20 minutes a night. -Your child should also be reading nightly (at LEAST 15 minutes). -Please check your child’s daily folder every day for any homework or immediate notes. -Homework is NOT graded; all homework is either complete or incomplete. Homework that I have seen and recorded as complete will be marked with a "P" for Practice. The goal of homework is for students to practice skills that we are learning in school, and I do not want them to feel anxious or stressed about getting each problem right. What matters is that they were responsible about doing it, and that they did their best! |
FLUENCY PASSAGES INSTRUCTIONS:
For the fluency passages, the same story should be read 3 times per evening, Monday-Thursday for homework, and the sheet needs to be returned on Friday.
1st reading—This time is to build accuracy. Time your child reading for 1 minute and help them count the number of words they read in one minute, and record it in the box at the bottom that reads “Practice at home” beside the corresponding day.
2nd reading—This time the purpose is to develop expression, also making sure your child correctly uses punctuation as they read.
3rd reading—The third reading is for building comprehension. Before reading for the third time, read through the questions on the back with your child to make sure they know what the question is really asking. Let those questions set a purpose for the 3rd reading, and have them keep those questions in mind as they read. After the 3rd reading, have your child answer the questions in complete sentences.

Letterland/Spelling Homework
-There will be a new list of spelling words each week.
-The spelling homework is the same for each week, and I will NOT send home a new letter or new Look-Say-Cover-Write-Check worksheet each week. Please keep both of these at home in a safe place.
-The Look-Say-Cover-Write-Check sheet is laminated so that your child can write on it with a dry-erase marker. You can also choose to create your own worksheet using a piece of notebook paper, or to print and/or make copies of the worksheet at home (download below).
Day 1: Have your child read the circled words and sentences to you two times. (You do not need to sign and return the list)
Day 2: Have your child practice writing the new words from list A using the Look-Say-Cover-Write-Check page.
Day 3: Have your child write six sentences. Each sentence should have at least one word from the tricky words or circled list words for the unit.
Day 4: Give your child a practice spelling test. Call out the circled list words and new sentences and have your child write them. Call out a few review words as well.
Spelling words: Unit 36
Our spelling pattern this week is words with two syllables, and we are focusing on words using one consonant to separate the syllables
camel
raven
Tricky Words:
Your child can also practice his or her spelling words online with Spelling City:
http://www.spellingcity.com/rebeccagifford/ (please note that I do not have a premium account, so only certain features are available)
You can also download all of Sunshine Math below (sunshine math is optional extra math/problem solving practice, which you can do with your child at home)
